Thursday, Post & Courier article, “Mt. P. may add 39 new firefighters to keep up with town’s rapid growth” burned deep as we at Cane Bay Plantation wait approximately 11 years for our Firehouse at Cane Bay. Whitesville Rural Volunteer Firehouse personnel give all to provide for us and this letter is by no means a negative regarding their efforts. Chief Timothy Stephenson took the initiative to apply for a US Government Low-Interest Loan to build the Firehouse at Cane Bay which will house Fire Department, EMT, and Satellite Sheriff’s Station. Permits and Construction company are in place and ready to build. But the US government continues to delay releasing funds sending form after form which must pass through the approval cycle.
One must consider how a “rural” area is still considered rural when permitted to build over 10 thousand homes without sufficient emergencies services which meet insurance standards. High, Middle, and Elementary schools reside within the Plantation. Does our local and US government consider the level of danger to the students and families? What will be the government's defense after a tragedy?
The Firehouse at Cane Bay Fundraising Committee continues raising funds through a myriad of programs for firemen’s uniforms, office equipment, and supplies: Brick programs for a memorial garden and paths, dances, Chili Fest, Tea/Fashion Show/Action, Coupon Books are a few of the programs produced in a two year period, all outlined on firehouseatcanebay.org and produced with relatively few volunteers. Sunday, March 24, 12 - 5 PM we are producing the Firehouse Fest on Cane Bay High School Athletic Fields. The FEST has been a huge effort. Our local and US governments need to apply such effort to bring the Firehouse at Cane Bay to fruition.
Local government alert! Fund building the Firehouse at Cane Bay for the immediate protection of Cane Bay Plantation and surrounding area residents. When the US Government Low-Interest Loan is approved, you can be reimbursed by the residents. Or perhaps, you may have already included us in your Berkeley County Firehouse Budget and we can notify the US Government their loan is longer needed. Just an “out of the government box” thought.
